What this tool does

Query Google Public DNS and Cloudflare independently and compare response codes and answers by type. A failure at one provider does not discard the other answer. These Anycast resolver observations do not establish worldwide propagation completion.

How to read the result

Read the matching, different or incomplete comparison first, followed by each provider's answer, TTL and time. TTL and answer order are excluded from equality. TXT quoting is decoded and text chunks are concatenated for comparison; original representations remain in the provider details. Equal answers do not establish equal DNSSEC state or identical caches for every user.

Glossary

DNS lookup
Asking public DNS for the values of a host and type.
record type
A, AAAA, NS, CNAME, MX, TXT, SOA, PTR or CAA; the combined query covers the common six types.
NODATA
The name exists but has no value of that type.
TTL
The allowed cache lifetime in seconds. Different remaining TTLs do not count as different answers.

FAQ

How is this different from Check DNS records?
This page queries two providers independently to identify differences. Check DNS records is for inspecting values, and dig is for reading detailed responses.
What if I leave the type empty?
The common set (A, AAAA, NS, CNAME, MX, TXT) is queried together.
What if values are empty?
NXDOMAIN (name absent), NODATA (type has no answer) and query failures are separate outcomes. A failed query is not reported as a missing record.
Where is the query sent?
Google Public DNS and Cloudflare over HTTPS. Both receive the entered name and type. Anycast selects the serving location; this page cannot select a city.
Do different answers mean a configuration error?
Not necessarily. Old caches, CDN routing and responses based on query origin can differ. Compare the previous TTL, authoritative configuration and your own device's result.
Does a match prove worldwide propagation is complete?
No. It means the response codes and answers from these two observations agree. Caches on other networks and answers at other locations were not observed.
Does personal data appear?
Published TXT strings are shown as returned. Registrant addresses are not queried here.
How do I find a hostname from an IP?
Select PTR and enter a public IPv4 or IPv6 address. We construct its reverse name and query public DNS. Private IPs are excluded. Missing PTR records do not necessarily indicate a web connection problem.

Check from your own device

Use dig on macOS or Linux, or nslookup on Windows. Each command queries one record type. Your device uses its own DNS settings and cache, so its results may differ from this page.

When expected records are missing

  1. Check the exact name and type. A www host and the zone apex are different names; reverse DNS uses PTR.
  2. Check the delegated name servers with NS, then inspect records in the corresponding control panel. The SOA serial helps compare zone revisions.
  3. After a change, caches may retain data for the previous TTL. TTL does not guarantee a worldwide completion time.
  4. SERVFAIL and transport failures do not mean a record is absent. Investigate delegation, DNSSEC and resolver availability.

Details come from DNS-over-HTTPS JSON responses. Omitted sections and flags are marked as not reported. AD reports the resolver's DNSSEC validation; these are not direct connections from your browser to an authoritative DNS server.
